Areas of Interest |
Most
people tell me that I love my work too much to truly enjoy my
hobbies of golfing and recquetball, so I prefer to talk about
those areas of service/interest. I began my career at Tyler Junior
College as an Instructor of English in September of 1969 and
served in that capacity until I became a counselor in 1976 and
began to pursuit my interests in Counseling and Psychology. During
that time I served as Senator to the Texas Counseling Association
(TCA) for 18 years, representing the Piney Woods Counselors of
East Texas. I was President of the Piney Woods Counseling
Association in 1981 before becoming very active with the Texas
Counseling Association. With that organization (TCA) I served as
Chair of the Human Rights Committee, the Publications Committee,
the Finance Committee, and the Awards Committee before being
elected State Treasurer in 1998. I subsequentially received the
prestigious TCA Presidential Award in 2000. I returned to my first
love of the teaching of English on a full-time basis in the year
2000 in order to devote more time to my ailing wife who passed
away in December of 2003. From 2004 through
2006, I served as Managing
Director, English Language Studies on an Interim basis. In May of
2005, I married the lovely Nan Connally Poole, who is a former
teacher at Rice Elementary School, and we are now continuing our
life's journey together. I have
taught a Sunday School class at Green Acres Baptist Church during
the past twenty-five years while helping to raise four children. |

Awards and Distinctions |
The
awards Dr. Barnes has received for his involvement with campus
organizations and activities include the Zelda Boucher Service
Award (in 1997 and in 2000), recognition as a Campus Mentor
(1995-1998), sponsor for the English Honor Society, sponsor for
Sigma Phi Epsilon, sponsor for Phi Theta Kappa, and three separate
terms as Faculty Senator. In 2002 he was selected as the
President-Elect of the Faculty Senate of Tyler Junior College, and
his term as Senate President is for the 2004-2005 school year. The
awards he has received include the Phi Theta Kappa Distinguished
Advisor Award in 2001 and the Horizon Award for the Texas Region
for his 2002-03 involvement with Phi Theta Kappa. He received the
Mattie Alice Scroggin Baker Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002
and the Piper Professor Award in 2004. The Piper award is given to
a total of thirty professors in Texas each year, and most are from
senior colleges and universities, so it is rare for a junior
college teacher to receive the award. Off campus organizations he
has been involved with include the Association for Retarded
Citizens (President in 1999), the Baptist Student Union
(coordinated efforts for building the new BSU in 1987), the East
Texas Communities Foundation (Scholarship Selection Committee,
1999-present), United Way volunteer, and teacher of Sunday School
classes for over 25 years. He was awarded the Someone Special
Volunteer Award in 2003 by KTBB for his Outstanding Service to the
local community. He has served as Chair of the Benevolence
Committee for Green Acres Baptist Church for several years. |
