English Department - Time Management
The flexibility of
scheduling time to work on the class material is a clear advantage to the
distance learner. This
flexibility, however, demands more student responsibility. Students must
discipline themselves and make time for understanding the material and meeting
the deadlines of the class.
Time spent in a distance
learning class is at least equal to the time spent in a traditional class;
however, more time may be required to complete complex tasks. Because a distance learning class
requires students to be independent learners, they must spend more time
mastering course material than students who have frequent and regular access to
the instructor.
In
addition to addressing course material in a timely manner, a delay in addressing
a technical difficulty can be disastrous to a student's success in a distance
learning class. A malfunctioning computer is no excuse for submitting
assignments late.
Successful distance
learners must plan ahead and know that procrastination is deadly.

successful in a distance learning class?
