ATTENDANCE AND CLASS WITHDRAWAL POLICY

English Language Studies

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Tyler Junior College is committed to the creation of a classroom environment which allows a positive teaching and learning experience. It is within this context that the following attendance and withdrawal policies are established.

The Attendance Policy of Tyler Junior College is set forth in the current edition of the Tyler Junior College Student Handbook.  In addition to those policies, the following standards are applicable to students who are enrolled in English classes. Finally, each English Instructor has the authority to set guidelines for his or her class in regard to attendance and withdrawal from the class.  See the reinstatement policy outlined in the Student Handbook.

Students enrolled in College Preparatory or Distance Learning courses may have more demanding/different attendance policies, so those students should check with their individual instructors.

The State of Texas will no longer provide funding for students who enroll in a course for the third time; therefore, it is in the student's best interest to complete a course rather than to withdraw from it.  Students who enroll in a course for the third time will pay a higher tuition for that course (about $75 per hour, or $225 for a three-hour course) in order to compensate for the loss of State funding.

Students who do not begin attendance in class are not eligible for financial aid. Their financial aid will be revoked by the financial aid office.

SPECIFIC POLICIES OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

  1. Students are expected to attend class each time the class meets and to make a contribution to the learning process.  If a student misses class frequently, repeatedly does not turn in assignments, clearly exhibits a lack of interest in the class, or does not attempt to fulfill the requirements of the course, the instructor may prohibit the student from attending the class.
  2. Students are expected to be on time for class and to remain for the entire period.  Those students who arrive late or leave early are inconsiderate of others and often create a disruption to the learning process, so such actions will not be tolerated.  Students who leave early or who arrive late may be counted absent by the instructor.
  3. The student is responsible for performing all requirements of the class.  When a student is absent from class, it is the responsibility of the student to find out what assignments were made during the absence. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor concerning make-ups for work missed, and it is preferably done prior to the absence of a student for a school-sponsored event and prior to returning to class after the absence.
